Philippe Patek Chronology
1839 Antoine Norbert de Patek and François Czapek form the Genevan pocket watch manufacturer Patek, Czapek & Co.
1844 Patek is introduced to the talents of Jean Adrien Philippe.
1845 The pair launches Patek & Co.
1851 Patek
& Co becomes Patek Philippe & Co and wins a gold medal at the first Worlds
Fair (
1901 The family firm becomes a stock corporation
1915 Pateks first complicated wrist watch is produced (for women): it is provided with hour-, quarter- and five minute repeaters.
1932 Patek Philippe is acquired by Charles and Jean Stern, long term providers of watch dials to Patek Philippe. The Classic Calatrava is born.
1933 Henry Graves, Jr. purchases the Graves watch for $11,570. It will re sell in 1999 for $11 million.
1948 Creation of Electronics Division and the development of quartz technology.
1962 Patel Philippe sets an unbroken precision record for mechanical watches at the competition of the Geneva Observatory.
1989 Caliber 89, the most complicated existing pocket watch commemorates the company 150th anniversary. Nine years and 1,728 components were required to produce this historical master piece featuring 35 horological functions, 33 of which are complications. Caliber 89 auctions for $3.2 million.
1999 The twenty-4® is Patek Philippes first bracelet watch in steel and diamonds.
2000 Star Caliber 200, a high-horology pocket watch, features 21 complications and includes six patented components.
2001 The Sky Moon Tourbillon is the most complicated wrist watch model and the first to show a complete replica of the night sky above the town chosen by the wearer.
On a second dial it indicates the motion of the
stars, angular motion and moon phases as well as sidereal time in hours and minutes of the
same place. In November, the
2002 Patek Philippe unveils the Celestial watch, Ref 5102, an astronomical wonder that depicts the exact configuration of the night sky, complete with the movement of the stars, the position of the moon and the moon phases within the lunar cycle, all on the watches front dial. Two years in the making, this watch incorporates achievements and developments previously accomplished by Patek Philippe for its Star Caliber 2000 pocket watch and the Sky Moon Tourbillon.
2003 Patek Philippe unveils the 10 Day Tourbillon, a COSC certified Tourbillon with no aperture on the dial.
Zenith Chronology
1865 At 22, Georges Favre-Jacot establishes the
Zenith manufacturing firm in Le Locle, on of
1875 Numerous innovations contribute to the
evolution of Zenith and the entire watch making industry. Just 10 years old the company
employs thirty percent of Le Locles population.
1900 Favre-Jacot wins first prize at the Grand
Prix de Paris.
1911 The brands official name is changed to
Fabrique des Montres Zenith S.A. By now, the company has accumulated 1,565 first prizes
from the universal exhibition in
1954 Zenith sets the new record in the wrist
chronometer category at the Observatory of Neuchâtel.
1969 A legend is born: the El Primero chronograph
calibre, the first integrated automatic watch with 36,000 vph.
1975 The production of the mechanical movements
yields to the rise of the quartz.
1984 With the strong revival of mechanical
horology, Zenith is ready to reclaim its status at the top. It relaunches its proprietary
El Primero movement.
1994 The new automatic extra flat movement Elite is
presented and voted Best Mechanical Movement by the International Professional Press.
1997 Two important novelties are developed: the
sports chronograph Rainbow Fly-back and the ChronoMaster Elite featuring a power reserve
display.
1999 Luxury conglomerate LVMH acquires Zenith.
2003 Zenith produces 17 movements for 25 new
models. The manufacture distributes these great timepieces through 15 branches around the
world.
2004 The brand launches an incredible collection of
ladies mechanical timepieces including the Baby Star Elite with stunning colours and
gemstone accents.
