The History of Breguet Marine Watches
Breguet is extremely proud of its origins. The Marine collection initially unveiled in 1990 pays homage to the company’s connection with the French Royal Navy, which was founded in 1775 by Abraham Louis Breguet, arguably the most instrumental contributor to the evolution of the modern-day watch.
The wealth and status of a country heavily depended on its command of the ocean during the 18th century, and the continuous improvements Abraham Louis Breguet made to his chronometers resulted in praise from the highest seat in the land. King Louis XVI of France was an avid fan of the watchmaker’s timepieces, as was Louis XVII. In 1815, Abraham Louis Breguet was given an official appointment as chronometer-maker to the French Navy, cementing his status as one the finest craftsmen of his time.
To honour Abraham Louis Breguet and the company’s maritime association, Breguet released several wristwatches under the Marine moniker. Even though the first Marine watch was introduced in 1990, the modern models came several years later in 2005 with the release of the 5817. This design came with a sportier aesthetic, a rubber strap and a stainless steel case, a first for the Marine collection.
While they are considered to be the most contemporary of the brand’s unique collections, Marines still capture the essence of Breguet’s traditional values, and are highly sought-after timepieces among devoted collectors across the generations.

Breguet uses white or rose gold for most of their Marine cases, adding a touch of elegance to their design styles. The traditional men’s Marine watch has a case diameter of 42mm while the women’s collection has a diameter of 34.6mm.
Every timepiece under the Marine name features self-winding movements with the base calibers comprising around 300 pieces. Carrying on with the company’s proud heritage of innovation, Breguet Marine watches use silicon, a relatively new material to the industry. Balance springs, pallets and escape wheels are made from silicon, which is resistant to corrosion and extreme temperatures, needs no lubrication and is anti-magnetic.
As you’d expect from a watch named Marine, the collection is suitable for diving, and a rotating bezel will track how much time you spend underwater. Breguet Marine watches aren’t full diving watches, though, so do remember to take note of its water resistance beforehand.
