The Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse “Iraqi” dial, signed for Saddam Hussein, sits at the crossroads of haute horology and Middle Eastern political history. During the 1970s–90s, Saddam famously commissioned elite Swiss watchmakers—Patek Philippe included—to produce watches bearing his name or the Iraqi emblem, often gifted to loyal officials and foreign dignitaries. The Ellipse, with its elegant proportions and minimalist dial, contrasts sharply with the power it symbolised. Today, these pieces are exceptionally rare, controversial, and highly sought after by serious collectors—valued not just for craftsmanship, but for the complex history they carry on the dial.
