18ct white gold Girard Perregaux Vintage 1945 XXL Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Ref 90270

The name of Swiss Watchmaker Girard Perregaux has been synonymous with technical innovation since its founding in 1791. A tourbillion movement, using three gold bridges, made by Girard Perregaux was awarded a Gold medal at the 1889 International Exposition in Paris. Their expertise has also extended to perhaps the most complex movement of them all; the Perpetual Calendar.
A highly complex complication, Perpetual Calendar’s display the date, month and often the year. Moreover, they may also show the day and moon-phase, but not necessarily. The movement will make allowances for the differing days in each month including February. Perpetual Calendar movements also take leap years in to consideration, meaning they only require adjustment once every 100 years, on each secular year e.g. 2100, 2200, 2300.

The perpetual calendar mechanism enables the date display to take into account the different lengths of the months automatically, including leap years. It is a mechanism based on a so-called ‘twelve-cam’ (which completes one rotation every 12 months), and a wheel called the ‘forty-eight’ (which completes one rotation every forty-eight months, or four years) enabling the inclusion of February 29th, each leap year.

This XXL Perpetual Calendar model is made even more special with it’s exquisite 18ct White Gold case, contrasting brilliantly with the black dial. The technical mastery behind a Perpetual Calendar mean that very few are manufactured compared to the less complicated movements, those that are made carry with them a hefty price tag. With a price under £14,000 this Girard Perregaux represents an accessible way to own one of the most complicated movements ever made.
