Patek Philippe Calatrava
Patek Philippe has repeatedly created design icons and the Calatrava has proved to be no exception. The Calatrava was launched in 1932, the same year the Stern family acquired the Swiss watch company. The Reference 96, the first incarnation of the Patek Philippe Calatrava, wonderfully captures the clean lines of the Bauhaus era. The design doctrine of ‘form follows function’ is clearly evident with applied baton-style hour markers, dauphine hour and minute hands and a small seconds display offering both lucidity and style.
Notably, the lugs of the Reference 96 were especially slim and the crown was relatively large in diameter, eschewing neighbouring protectors. Today, the Reference 5196 is probably the closest genetic descendent of the original 1932 model.
The Calatrava name references the Calatrava cross, used in the 12th century on banners carried by an order of Cistercian knights. The knights defended the fortress of Calatrava and the cross is now used by Patek Philippe to adorn such items as crowns, oscillating masses and clasps.
