Breguet Type XXI Watches
Honouring the company’s historic allegiance to the French armed services, the Breguet Type XXI is the modern successor to the Type XX, a timepiece originally created for the French Naval Air Army. With its striking aviation-style dial and fine leather wrist straps, Breguet Type XXI watches combine military precision timekeeping with a smart, contemporary look.
The History of Breguet Type XXI Watches
The Breguet Type XXI’s origins start with its ancestral model, the Type XX. Initially released in 1954, the Type XX was the first aviation watch created by the Breguet company.
Original specifications called for a chronograph that could withstand use in aviation and that could be used for aerial navigation. The most important element for navigation would be the “flyback” function, which allowed the pilot to reset the chronograph to zero and automatically started the chronograph again without the wearer having to press restart. This was instrumental to “dead reckoning,” the process of calculating one’s position based on direction and distance travelled rather than through the use of notable landmarks.
In the early 2000s, Breguet started production of the Type XXI, a more modern version of its 1950’s counterpart, but one which retains that touch of vintage vigour. 2016 saw the introduction of the Type XXI 3817, a stylised timepiece that never looks out of place and is perfect for everyday use as well as special occasions.
More recently, Breguet has released a new version of the Type XXI, the 3815 model. This is a limited edition with two examples available. One with green numerals and hands, and one with orange. Both options come with aged calfskin straps and are limited to 250 apiece. The Perfect Timepiece in the Air and on the Ground
Originally designed for aviation, the Breguet Type XXI is the perfect timepiece regardless of whether you’re soaring through the skies or keeping your feet firmly on the ground. As the spiritual successor to the Type XX, the Type XXI retains its primary aviation functions, but has also been adapted for modern, everyday use.
XXIs are slightly larger than their older counterparts with a diameter of 42mm. The cases are made from titanium, which provides added comfort more suitable if you plan on wearing the watch regularly. Certain models are available in steel or rose gold.
As you would expect from a Breguet aviation chronograph, the Type XXIs come with the flyback function, a 24–hour day/night indicator, a bidirectional timing bezel and a balance frequency of ten Hertz or 72,000 vibrations per hour. This allows for optimum reading precision, giving you the exact time every time.

Breguet is steeped in history, and the company’s founder is widely considered one of the greatest watchmakers of all time. The company was first set up in 1775 by its namesake, Abraham Louis Breguet. His innovations are still used in watches today, and the Type XXI is a unique take on the company’s usual offerings.
With notable admirers across the ages, a Breguet timepiece adds significant value and prestige to any watch collection. Some of the company’s avid patrons include Louis XVI and Louis XVII of France, and Kings George III, IV and Edward VII, as well as Queen Victoria of the UK.
