Embodying the culture of German watchmaking excellence, Glashütte Original watches perfectly intertwine traditional elements with modern components. These unique designs have inspired generations of watch lovers, and are manufactured according to the strictest of standards. Acclaimed for its high quality, the brand has upheld the Glashütte name as a mark of true quality, as significant as the term “Swiss Made”.
The History of Glashütte Original Watches
While the Glashütte Original company was officially formed in 1990, its true lineage is a lot longer and more complex. The same is true for many other watchmakers from the region.
A former mining settlement, Glashütte’s horological history began building from the mid-19th century onward. In 1845, the first watchmakers began settling in the area, thanks to financial support from the government. Its inhabitants were trained in the art of watchmaking, many of whom became independent watchmakers themselves. Over time, the outstanding quality of Glashütte watches gained worldwide acclaim.
Both world wars left their mark on Glashütte. Thanks to their adaptability and ingenuity, the watchmakers managed to pull through and evolve further, despite the difficult circumstances. After World War II, eight firms — UROFA, UFAG, VEB Lange, VEB Feintechnik, VEB Messtechnik, VEB Estler, VEB Präzision Glashütte and the Makarenko trade school — merged to form the state-owned VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe (GUB). This would become the precursor for what we know as Glashütte Original today.
Over the next few decades, this newly-established company would produce a wide range of ladies’ and mens’ watches that focused on durability and daily use. The timepieces boasted increased accuracy, automatic winding and date displays, amongst other things. When the Quartz Crisis hit, the company embraced the sudden demand for quartz-powered timepieces, but refused to stop producing mechanical movements.
The reunification of Germany in 1990 was the catalyst for the next evolution of the brand. VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe underwent yet another name change, becoming Glashütter Uhrenbetrieb GmbH. Then, in 1994, it rebranded again to Glashütte Original, harking back to the custom of marking watches as genuine “Glashütte originals”. In 2000, Glashütte Original became part of the Swatch Group, allowing it to expand to thrill a larger international audience.
