The Cartier Santos is one of the most iconic and enduring timepieces in watchmaking history. It was created in 1904 by Louis Cartier for his friend, the Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who needed a reliable timekeeping device while flying. The Santos was one of the first wristwatches designed specifically for men, as wristwatches were not yet popular at the time.
The design of the Santos was groundbreaking, featuring a square case with rounded corners, exposed screws on the bezel, and a distinctive square dial with Roman numerals. This design has remained remarkably consistent over the years, evolving subtly to meet contemporary tastes while staying true to its heritage.
The Santos became a symbol of modernity and elegance, attracting admirers from all walks of life, including celebrities, artists, and royalty. Its timeless design and association with aviation have cemented its status as a horological icon, making it one of Cartier’s most celebrated and recognizable timepieces.
