The Rolex Oyster’s history began in 1926 when Rolex introduced the world’s first waterproof wristwatch, aptly named the “Oyster.” The innovative case design featured a hermetically sealed case back, screw-down crown, and crystal, creating a barrier that protected the watch’s movement from dust and moisture.
The Oyster case’s successful water-resistant concept was demonstrated when Mercedes Gleitze swam across the English Channel wearing a Rolex Oyster, showcasing its durability and reliability. This event marked a pivotal moment in the brand’s history.
Over the years, the Oyster case became a hallmark of Rolex watches, signifying not only water resistance but also robustness and precision. It evolved to incorporate additional features like the Perpetual movement, which introduced the self-winding mechanism. Today, the Rolex Oyster remains an emblem of the brand’s commitment to innovation, performance, and enduring design.
